There’s so much hoopla about CBD oil! Perhaps your best friend is a “reliable source.” It’s available in 44 U.S. states with prices ranging from reasonable to high. CBD companies claim “highest quality” and “better ingredients.” Nothing has made this much stir on the health-foods and wellness medicines scene since the gluten-is-a-bad-thing trend. If knowledge is power, you’re probably feeling weak about CBD (hemp) oil and its benefits.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD is an acronym for “cannabidiol.” Prevention.com says, “CBD oil is typically extracted from the resin glands on cannabis (marijuana) buds and flowers. It can also be extracted from hemp, which is an industrial, fibrous form of cannabis that has small buds and a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a concentration of 0.3% or less (THC is the chemical compound that’s responsible for making people high). It’s usually diluted with another type of oil, like MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) oil.
For those of us who flunked high school chemistry, it’s intimidating language, but here’s what you need to know: CBD oil will not test positive on a drug screen. You won’t get “high” from CBD oil and there are numerous benefits.
CBD Oil Companies’ Claims Can Be Misleading
With little regulation, liquid drops, capsules, syrups, teas, lotions and potions are marketed as “CBD oil.” The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to get its hands on CBD oils, which is a mixed blessing. The downside is, companies aren’t regulated and can tweak manufacturing and distribution – especially labeling claims – more to what sells than what’s real.
We often complain about our U.S. pharmaceutical process, but the basic system does work. We do need it. A 2017 JAMA study found more than two-thirds of CBD products sold online contained higher or lower concentrations of the main ingredient than labels indicated. Some of them also contained significant levels of THC. Some states regulate CBD manufacturing; others don’t.
“Studies have shown that these products can contain impurities, pesticides, fungus, or not the amount of CBD that is on the label,” says Timothy E. Welty, Pharm.D., FCCP BCPS, chair of the department of clinical sciences in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Drake University in Iowa.
What are the Benefits of CBD Oil?
The advantages of using CBD oil is such a new technology that most claims are untested. Much scientific evidence seems to be from Facebook® and Twitter® posts hailing CBD oil as a miracle drug. What’s true and how many reviews are placebo-effected? Another complication adding to an already complicated mix: Many CBD users adjust their doses based on what they can afford rather than what they need.
Josh Axe, DNM, DC, CNS, is a doctor of natural medicine and clinical nutritionist who claims there are proven benefits of CBD oil:
- Antipsychotic effects – Safely effective in treating schizophrenia and psychosis.
- Anxiety reduction – Improves situational anxiety in people with social anxiety. May also be effective for panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Cardiovascular improvements – CBD protects against vascular damage due to a high glucose-based environment.
- Lowers diabetes incidences – CBD research shows significantly reduced insulitis.
- Nausea relief – CBD has anti-nausea benefits and in low doses can suppress toxin-induced vomiting from chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
- Pain and inflammation relief – The nonpsychoactive components of marijuana may represent a unique class of agents for chronic pain treatment.
- Seizures and neurological disorders management – In addition to helping control epileptic seizure incidences, benefits can include enhanced alertness and improved sleep.
Hemp Holds Hope for the Future
Possibly the most exciting news and hope for the future is the news that CBD oil has been shown to be effective in treating cancer. It has slowed the spread of cancerous cells in the body. There is hope research will continue to develop ways to use CBD in cancer treatment.
Another research area for CBD use is the area of athletic performance enhancement. Athletes can better manage pain, inflammation, and performance anxiety with CBD. Basically, it boosts your immune system and can reduce injury recovery time. And for some athletes, time is money!
